This ear is built entirely from hoops in the same gold tone. At the top, a slim jewelled ring sits in a helix pierced moments earlier, with the skin still pink around it. On the lobe, two hoops stack: a wide flat gold huggie in the first hole and a thin beaded hoop in the second, slightly above and behind it. Three hoops, one ear, one metal
Hoops on the lobe are simple: a huggie is a small ring that closes snugly around the bottom edge of the lobe, and a wider flat huggie like the one here reads as a bold band, while the thin beaded hoop in the second hole above it is lighter and sits slightly further back. Together they form a graduated pair. The helix ring at the top repeats the shape at the rim of the ear, sized so it curves neatly round the cartilage edge with its small stones facing forward. Matching the gold tone across all three pieces is deliberate; mixed metals can work, but a single tone is the cleanest way to make a multi-piercing ear look planned.
How we pierce the helix and lobes at the studio
The helix is cartilage and is always pierced with a single-use sterile needle, marked first with you in the mirror so a ring will sit flat against the rim once healed. Lobes can be pierced with a needle or with our professional piercing system using sealed sterile cartridges, and if you want hoops we place the piercing a little higher so the ring can hug the edge properly. Everything is opened in front of you and the station is sterilised between clients. Starter jewellery is hypoallergenic implant-grade metal; for the helix we normally begin with a flat-back stud and fit a ring like this one once the piercing has settled, unless the ring is fitted as a well-sized starter with the client's understanding.
Healing a helix ring and lobe hoops
The two lobe piercings typically heal in six to eight weeks. The helix takes six to twelve months and often longer, and a ring in a healing helix needs more care than a stud because it moves: avoid sleeping on that side, keep hair tied back so it does not wrap around the ring, and do not spin or rotate it. Clean all three piercings twice a day with sterile saline and dry gently with a clean tissue. Skip earbuds and phone calls on that ear while the helix heals. If the ring keeps catching or a bump forms, we can swap it for a flat-back stud until the cartilage has healed and then return to the hoop.

How long does a helix take to heal with a ring in it?
Allow six to twelve months, and be prepared for longer because a ring moves more than a stud and every movement slows cartilage healing. Sleep on the other side, keep hair off it and never rotate it. If it stays irritated, switching to a flat-back stud for the healing period and returning to the ring afterwards is the reliable fix.
Can I get hoops in my lobes straight away?
Small, well-fitted huggies can be worn from the start in a lobe piercing, but a flat stud is more stable during the six to eight week healing period, so we usually pierce with a stud and fit hoops afterwards. If you know you want hoops, tell us at marking so the piercing is placed slightly higher on the lobe for a ring to hug the edge cleanly.
