How to Heal a New Tattoo: The Studio Routine, Step by Step

Tattoo Aftercare Guide

A new tattoo is an open wound for the first two weeks and a healing scar for the next four. Wash it gently two to three times a day, keep it lightly moisturised, keep it out of the sun and keep it out of water. Do that, and almost every tattoo heals clean and holds its colour.

This page is the same routine we explain to every client at Black Poison Tattoo Studio in Bodakdev, Ahmedabad, written for Ahmedabad conditions: 40-degree summers, monsoon humidity and dust on a two-wheeler. It is what is on the aftercare card we hand you, with the reasons behind each rule.

What you get from us after your session: a printed or WhatsApp aftercare card; your artist’s instructions for removing the wrap or second-skin film; a direct WhatsApp line, +918141338866, for healing questions, answered every day 11 AM to 9 PM; and a free touch-up within three months if any line settles lighter than it should, provided the aftercare was followed. If anything on this page differs from what your artist told you, follow your artist: they saw the skin.

Tattoo healing stages: what happens week by week

The first few weeks after getting a tattoo are a period of intense healing. Here is what to expect:

Days 1-3: plasma and swelling. Your body expels plasma, a clear fluid mixed with a little blood, from the tattooed area. Slight oozing, swelling and tenderness are normal.

Days 4-7: scabbing and itching. As the plasma dries, light scabs form. Do not pick or scratch; picking pulls ink and can scar. Pat the area for relief.

Weeks 2-4: flaking and peeling. The scabs dry and flake off, revealing the new tattoo underneath. This is normal healing, not a sign of infection.

Weeks 4-8: settling. Colours can look slightly muted while the top layer of skin heals. This is temporary; the final colour settles over the next few months.

Beyond 8 weeks: healed and in maintenance. From here, sun protection and moisturising are what keep it sharp.

Healing times vary with size, placement, style and your own skin. Large colour pieces and anything on hands, feet or joints take longer. For a photo timeline, read our day-by-day healing guide.

What to wash and moisturise with (products you can buy in India)

You need four things, all available at any chemist in Ahmedabad:

A mild, fragrance-free cleanser. Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser, Sebamed, or a plain unscented glycerin soap. Not Dettol, not antiseptic or antibacterial bar soaps, not scrubs or loofahs.

Lukewarm water. Hot geyser water opens the skin and slows healing.

A thin moisturiser or tattoo balm. A fragrance-free, non-comedogenic lotion (Cetaphil, Aveeno, Sebamed) or a tattoo-specific balm. Apply a layer thin enough that the skin still breathes. Avoid thick petroleum jelly (Vaseline) on a fresh tattoo: it seals in heat and sweat, which in Ahmedabad summer is how tattoos get bumpy. Coconut oil only after peeling is complete.

Clean paper tissues, loose cotton clothing, and SPF 50 PA+++ sunscreen for after it heals. Tissues lint less than towels; a towel that has touched the rest of your body should not touch the tattoo.

Day-by-day tattoo aftercare routine

With those four things ready, this is the routine:

Day 1: Keep the wrap or second-skin film on exactly as long as your artist said (usually 2 to 4 hours for cling film, up to 3 to 5 days for second-skin). After removing it, wash with lukewarm water and cleanser, pat dry with a clean tissue, apply a thin layer of moisturiser.

Days 2-14: Wash and moisturise 2 to 3 times a day. No picking, no scratching; if it itches, a cool compress or a light slap over the moisturiser. Short lukewarm showers are fine; no soaking.

Weeks 2-4: Flaking and peeling. Let it shed on its own. Keep washing and moisturising 2 to 3 times a day.

Weeks 4-8: Reduce washing to normal bathing, keep moisturising daily. Colour looks brighter as the top layer settles, but the skin is still healing underneath.

Sun, swimming, sweat and sleep: the rules

  • Sun: keep the tattoo covered with loose clothing for the first 4 weeks. After it has healed, SPF 50 broad-spectrum every time it is exposed, for life. Sun is the number one reason tattoos fade.
  • Swimming and soaking: no pools, sea, rivers, lakes, hot tubs or long baths for at least 3 weeks; 4 weeks for large or colour pieces. Showers are fine from day 1.
  • Sweat and gym: skip the gym for 3 to 5 days, then light training with the tattoo covered and a wash straight after. No shared mats or benches touching it for 2 weeks.
  • Sleep: clean sheet, and do not sleep on the tattoo for the first week. If it sticks to the sheet, wet the sheet with lukewarm water and peel gently, never rip.
  • Alcohol: avoid for 24 hours before and after; it thins blood and increases oozing and swelling.
  • Clothing: loose cotton over the area for 2 weeks; no tight denim on a leg tattoo, and keep straps off a shoulder tattoo where you can.

Aftercare in Ahmedabad: heat, monsoon, dust and festival season

  • Summer (March to June): heat and sweat are the enemy. Wash 3 times a day rather than 2, use a thinner layer of balm, stay in loose cotton, avoid the midday sun entirely. Air conditioning dries skin, so moisturise before bed.
  • Monsoon (July to September): humidity slows drying and raises fungal risk. Pat the tattoo completely dry after washing, do not cover it with plastic, change out of sweaty or rain-wet clothes quickly, and do not wade through waterlogged roads with a fresh leg or foot tattoo.
  • Winter: dry air; moisturise twice daily and avoid very hot geyser showers.
  • Two-wheeler dust: for the first week, cover the tattoo with a loose cotton sleeve or scarf (not a tight bandage) while riding, and wash it when you arrive.
  • Festivals and weddings: plan tattoos at least 3 to 4 weeks before Navratri, Holi, a wedding or a beach trip. No mehendi, haldi or Holi colour on or near a healing tattoo; no garba sweat in week 1.

Signs of infection and when to contact us

Normal: redness for 2 to 3 days, warmth on day 1 and 2, clear or slightly bloody plasma, itching, peeling, mild swelling that goes down.

Not normal: redness that spreads after day 3, swelling that increases after day 3, yellow or green pus, a bad smell, red streaks running from the tattoo, fever or chills, or pain that gets worse instead of better.

If you see anything on the not-normal list, send a photo to the studio on WhatsApp (+918141338866) first; we see healing tattoos every day and will tell you whether it needs a doctor. Fever or red streaks: see a doctor the same day. Do not self-treat with antiseptic or antibiotic creams (Soframycin, Betadine, Boroline) unless a doctor prescribes them; several of them pull ink out of a healing tattoo.

Long-term tattoo care

  • Moisturise regularly. Even after healing, a fragrance-free moisturiser once or twice a day keeps the skin supple and the lines crisp.
  • Sun protection is forever. SPF 50 whenever the tattoo is exposed. Faded tattoos are almost always sun-faded tattoos.
  • Lifestyle. Smoking, heavy drinking and big weight swings all age a tattoo faster.
  • Touch-ups. Some softening over the years is natural. Within three months of your session a touch-up is free; after that, book a touch-up and we will assess it. Healed examples of our work are in the portfolio.

Tattoo aftercare FAQ

How long does a tattoo take to heal?

The surface heals in 2 to 3 weeks, the tattoo looks healed at 4 to 6 weeks, and the deeper skin layers finish settling in about 3 months. Large colour pieces and tattoos on hands, feet and joints take the longest.

Can I shower after getting a tattoo?

Yes. Once the wrap is off, a short lukewarm shower from day 1 is fine. Do not let the water beat directly on it, do not soak, and pat it dry with a clean tissue.

When can I swim after a tattoo?

Not for at least 3 weeks; 4 weeks for large or colour work. Pools, sea, rivers, lakes and hot tubs all carry bacteria and soften the healing skin.

Is it normal for a new tattoo to peel and itch?

Yes. Peeling and itching between day 4 and day 14 are part of healing. Do not pick or scratch; moisturise and, if you must, slap lightly over the moisturiser.

What should I put on a new tattoo?

A thin layer of fragrance-free moisturiser or tattoo balm 2 to 3 times a day after washing. Not thick petroleum jelly, not antiseptic creams, not coconut oil in the first two weeks.

Which sunscreen is best for tattoos in India?

Any broad-spectrum SPF 50 PA+++ sunscreen, applied only after the tattoo has fully healed (about 3 to 4 weeks). Before that, cover it with clothing instead.

Can I go to the gym after getting a tattoo?

Wait 3 to 5 days, then train lightly with the tattoo covered, wash it straight after, and keep it off shared benches and mats for 2 weeks.

How do I know if my tattoo is infected?

Spreading redness after day 3, swelling that grows, yellow or green pus, a bad smell, red streaks or fever. Send us a photo on WhatsApp first; fever or streaks means a doctor the same day.

Do you offer free touch-ups?

Yes. Black Poison Tattoo Studio touches up lines that healed lighter than they should within three months of the session, free, provided the aftercare was followed. Book a touch-up through the booking page or WhatsApp.
