Helix placement and choosing a decorative stud
The helix is the outer rim of cartilage at the top of the ear, and a stud there sits on the edge where it catches light from the side. In the first photo the flower cluster is the focal point, balanced by a plain stud on the upper lobe and a crystal hoop at the bottom. In the second, the fresh star is deliberately tiny so the pink skin around it can settle, while the lobe carries a square crystal and a teardrop halo. In the third, the four-point star on the helix is echoed by a jewelled bar lower down and a crystal flower on the lobe. Cluster and star studs work on the helix because their flat backs let the decorative front sit close to the rim.
How we pierce the helix at the studio
Helix piercings are done with a single-use sterile needle, not a gun, so the channel is clean and the cartilage is not crushed. We mark the position with you in the mirror, taking into account the curve of your rim, where your hair falls and what already sits on the lobe, so the finished ear looks intentional. Everything is opened fresh in front of you and the surfaces are sterilised between clients. Starter jewellery is an implant-grade titanium flat-back labret in a plain or small decorative end, sized slightly long to allow for swelling; larger cluster pieces like the flower are usually fitted after healing.
Healing a helix and keeping the jewellery clean
A helix typically takes six to twelve months to heal, sometimes longer. Clean twice daily with sterile saline, dry gently with a clean tissue and leave the stud alone; twisting it is the most common mistake we see. Sleep on the opposite side, keep headphones and phones off the rim and tie hair back so it does not wrap around the post. Decorative ends with stones need a little extra attention because product and skin oils collect underneath; a saline rinse followed by careful drying keeps them bright. Once the swelling has gone we shorten the post, and once fully healed the end can be swapped for a bigger cluster or a ring.

How painful is a helix piercing?
Most people describe a sharp pinch and a sense of pressure for a second or two as the needle passes through the rim, followed by warmth and mild throbbing for the rest of the day. It is a quick single motion and noticeably easier than many expect. The tenderness fades over the first week if the ear is left alone.
How long does a helix take to heal?
Allow six to twelve months for full healing. The outside may look calm after a few weeks but the cartilage underneath is still repairing, and changing jewellery or sleeping on it during that time causes bumps and setbacks. Keep up saline cleaning throughout and come back to us for a post downsize once the initial swelling has settled.
Can I get a flower cluster or star stud fitted straight away?
Small ends like the tiny star in the second photo are fine as starter jewellery. Larger clusters are heavier and sit wider on the rim, so we usually pierce with a plain or small end first and fit the cluster once the piercing has healed. Can I get more than one piercing on the same ear in one visit?
Yes. Helix plus lobe combinations like these are common and we can do them in the same session. Two or three fresh piercings on one ear do heal more slowly, because it is harder to keep pressure off all of them, so we will advise on spacing and may suggest splitting the plan across two visits depending on your ear and lifestyle.
