These three ears show the same idea done three ways: a single small crystal stud placed high on the ear, either in the flat, the smooth plate of cartilage inside the upper rim, or in the helix, the rim itself. The first and third photos are flat piercings sitting above dressed-up lobes; the middle photo is a helix pierced minutes before, with the skin still pink. Flat versus helix, and the jewellery in each
The flat is the broad area of cartilage between the helix rim and the inner folds of the ear, and it suits a stud because there is space around it for the stone to show. The helix is the outer rim, and a stud there sits right on the edge. In the first photo a crystal stud in the flat sits above a lobe stacked with two gold jewelled labret studs and a plain crystal stud, so the whole ear reads as a column of sparkle. In the second, a fresh helix stud is the only jewellery, which shows how neat a single stone looks. In the third, a gold flat stud tops a lobe wearing a square crystal drop hoop and a butterfly charm hoop.
How we pierce cartilage at the studio
Flat and helix piercings are always done with a single-use sterile needle. Cartilage does not tolerate the blunt force of a gun well, and the needle gives a clean channel that heals better. We mark the spot with you looking in the mirror first, choosing the position based on the shape of your ear and any lobe jewellery it will sit above, so the finished ear looks balanced. The needle, gloves and jewellery are opened fresh in front of you. Starter jewellery is a flat-back labret stud in implant-grade titanium, which is hypoallergenic and long enough to allow for the swelling of the first few weeks.
Healing a flat or helix piercing
Both are cartilage piercings, so allow six to twelve months for full healing and do not be surprised if it takes longer. Clean twice a day with sterile saline, never twist the stud and avoid sleeping on that ear; a travel pillow with a hole in the middle helps. Keep hair, hats, headphones and phone screens away from it where you can. Swelling in the first weeks is normal, and once it settles we downsize the labret post so the stud sits snug and does not catch. Leave the jewellery in place until the piercing is fully healed, and come back to us if a bump appears rather than trying home remedies.

Does a flat or helix piercing hurt?
Both are cartilage, so they feel sharper than a lobe: a firm pinch for a second as the needle passes, then a dull warmth for the rest of the day. The flat is slightly thicker than the helix rim, so some people feel a bit more pressure there. Either way it is over in a moment and most clients find it easier than expected.
How long do flat and helix piercings take to heal?
Expect six to twelve months for full healing, and often a little longer for the flat because the cartilage is thicker. The surface calms within a few weeks, which can be misleading; the inside is still healing. Keep up saline cleaning and avoid pressure on the ear the whole time. We usually downsize the post after the initial swelling has gone.
Can I get a flat and a lobe piercing in the same session?
Yes, and many clients do, which is how the stacked looks in the first and third photos are built. Bear in mind that multiple fresh piercings on the same ear heal more slowly because you cannot avoid pressure on all of them at once. We will suggest an order and spacing that suits your ear and your sleeping habits.
When can I change the stud for a different one?
Not until the piercing is fully healed, which for cartilage means several months at least. Changing early reopens the channel and invites irritation. When it is ready, we can swap the starter stud for a different crystal, a gold piece or a small hoop and fit it for you so the length and gauge are right.
