A single crystal stud in the ear lobe is the most requested men's piercing we do, and these four photos show why. Each is one lobe, one stud: a round crystal in a claw setting, a small square crystal, a square princess cut in a four-claw setting and a small round stone. All four were freshly pierced at Black Poison Tattoo Studio in Ahmedabad, some with the skin still slightly pink, and together they show that the same simple piercing works with every style of face and hair.
Placement and choosing the stone
A men's lobe piercing is placed in the centre of the fleshy part of the lobe, low enough to sit clear of the cartilage and high enough that the stud does not drag towards the edge as the lobe ages. The four studs here are different cuts of the same idea. The round crystal is the classic and reads as a bright point from any angle. The small square is the quietest, barely noticeable unless the light catches it. The princess cut is larger and sharper-edged, a deliberate choice for someone who wants the piercing seen. The last photo shows a small round stone again, on a different wearer, and it looks just as right, which is the point: a lobe stud suits men of every age.

How we pierce the lobe at the studio
Lobes can be pierced two ways here, with a single-use sterile needle or with our professional piercing system that uses sealed, sterile single-use cartridges, and we explain both so you can choose. Either way the position is marked with you looking in the mirror, and if you plan a second piercing later we place the first to leave room. Gloves and jewellery are opened in front of you and the station is sterilised between clients. The starter studs are hypoallergenic, implant-grade metal with a secure back, sized so there is space for the small amount of swelling in the first few days. The whole visit at our Ahmedabad studio takes only a few minutes.

Healing a lobe piercing
Lobes are the easiest piercing to heal. Most settle in six to eight weeks, and the first few days are the only time it feels tender. Clean twice a day with sterile saline, dry gently and leave the stud in place; do not twist it, and do not swap it for a different earring until the six to eight weeks are up. Sleep on the other side for the first week or so, keep hair products and phone screens away from it, and take care with towels, helmet straps and beard trimmers, which are the usual things that catch a fresh lobe stud. Once healed, a men's lobe piercing needs almost no maintenance.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a lobe piercing hurt for men?
Very little. The lobe is soft tissue with no cartilage, so it is a quick pinch that most people compare to a firm flick, over in a second. The ear may feel warm and slightly tender for a day or two. It is the easiest piercing on the body, which is why it is the usual starting point for men trying a piercing for the first time.
How long does a men's lobe piercing take to heal?
Typically six to eight weeks. The stud should stay in throughout, and you should clean the piercing twice a day with sterile saline rather than alcohol or ointments. After that period you can change to a different stud or a hoop. If the lobe is still sore, red or crusting after eight weeks, keep the stud in and message us for advice.
Which stud looks best for a man's first lobe piercing?
A small round or square crystal is the safest choice because it suits every face and stays understated. A princess cut is larger and catches more light if you want the piercing noticed. Black studs and plain metal balls are also popular. We keep all of these in stock in hypoallergenic metal, so you can compare them against your ear before we pierce.
Needle or piercing gun for a men's lobe?
Both are available for lobes at the studio. A needle gives a very clean channel and is what we use for all cartilage; our professional piercing system uses sealed sterile cartridges and is fast and precise for lobes. We will explain the difference at your visit and pierce with whichever you prefer. Either way the jewellery is single-use and sterile.
