What is a Cover-up Tattoo?
A cover-up tattoo is a new tattoo designed to conceal an existing one. The new design must be large enough and dark enough to completely mask the old ink. This requires careful planning – the shape, placement, and colour palette of the new design all have to account for what is underneath.
At Black Poison, every cover-up starts with a thorough assessment of the existing tattoo. We examine the ink density, colours, depth, and placement before designing the solution. You are never given a generic design – your cover-up is custom-built for your specific tattoo.

Honest assessment: Some tattoos are harder to cover than others. Very dark, solid black ink is the most difficult. Very large existing tattoos may require a consultation before we can confirm what is achievable. We always give you an honest answer at the consultation – we will not take your money if we cannot deliver the result.
How We Approach a Cover-up
The Cover-up Process
1. Consultation (Free)
Bring a photo of the existing tattoo or visit in person. We assess colour, density, and placement. We discuss realistic design options and show you reference work.
2. Custom Design
Our cover-up specialist creates a design that works with the geometry of the existing tattoo. This is not a standard design – it is built specifically to mask what is underneath.
3. Approval
You review the design, placement, and sizing before any work begins.
4. Cover-up Session
Depending on the complexity, a cover-up may take one or multiple sessions. Your artist will set expectations clearly in advance.
5. Touch-up
A follow-up session is often included to perfect any areas where the old ink shows through after healing.

Pricing
Cover-up tattoos typically cost more than a fresh tattoo of the same size because of the additional design complexity and the skill required to mask existing ink. Pricing is assessed after the free consultation.
