How Cover-up Tattoos Work
What is a Cover-up Tattoo?
A cover-up tattoo is a new tattoo designed to conceal an existing one. The new design must be large enough and dark enough to completely mask the old ink. This requires careful planning – the shape, placement, and colour palette of the new design all have to account for what is underneath.
At Black Poison, every cover-up starts with a thorough assessment of the existing tattoo. We examine the ink density, colours, depth, and placement before designing the solution. You are never given a generic design – your cover-up is custom-built for your specific tattoo.
What We Can Cover
What Can Be Covered?
Yes, we can cover:
- Name tattoos (ex-partner names, faded names)
- Old amateur or prison tattoos
- Faded or blowout tattoos
- Tattoos you have outgrown
- Poorly executed studio work
- Tribal or blackwork you want to update
- Partial tattoos (adding to incomplete work)
Honest assessment: Some tattoos are harder to cover than others. Very dark, solid black ink is the most difficult. Very large existing tattoos may require a consultation before we can confirm what is achievable. We always give you an honest answer at the consultation – we will not take your money if we cannot deliver the result.
How We Approach a Cover-up
The Cover-up Process
1. Consultation (Free)
Bring a photo of the existing tattoo or visit in person. We assess colour, density, and placement. We discuss realistic design options and show you reference work.
2. Custom Design
Our cover-up specialist creates a design that works with the geometry of the existing tattoo. This is not a standard design – it is built specifically to mask what is underneath.
3. Approval
You review the design, placement, and sizing before any work begins.
4. Cover-up Session
Depending on the complexity, a cover-up may take one or multiple sessions. Your artist will set expectations clearly in advance.
5. Touch-up
A follow-up session is often included to perfect any areas where the old ink shows through after healing.

Cover-up Tattoo FAQs
Straight answers to what people ask before they book
How much does a cover-up tattoo cost in Ahmedabad?
Cover-up tattoos at Black Poison Tattoo Studio start from Rs. 3,000 for a small name or symbol cover-up. Because a cover-up must be bigger and darker than the old tattoo, it usually costs one size band more than a fresh tattoo, so most medium cover-ups fall between Rs. 5,000 and Rs. 10,000. The exact price comes after a free assessment.
Can any tattoo be covered up?
Most tattoos can be covered, including names, faded ink, blowouts and amateur work. Very dark, solid black tattoos are the hardest and may need a bolder design or a few laser sessions to lighten them first. We tell you honestly at the free consultation what can and cannot be achieved.
How much bigger does a cover-up tattoo need to be?
A cover-up is usually one and a half to two times the size of the old tattoo, because the new design needs enough dark detail to hide the existing lines. Small, faded tattoos can sometimes be covered at close to the same size.
How many sessions does a cover-up take?
Small cover-ups are usually finished in one session. Larger or darker cover-ups may need two or three sessions spaced about four weeks apart, so each layer heals before more ink is added.
Can you cover a name tattoo?
Yes. Name tattoos are among the most common cover-up requests. Script is thin, so a name is usually one of the easier tattoos to hide under a flower, feather, mandala or any design you choose.
Do I need laser removal before a cover-up?
Usually not. Laser lightening only helps when the old tattoo is very dark or very large and you want a light or colourful design over it. For most cover-ups, a well-planned darker design is enough.
